Old Sallow Lane

Sitting in fields of wind-sighing grain ringed by vigils and thickets of trees no sound comes creeping from old Sallow Lane. In the village we all do as we please and all are best pleased to follow the laws and not one of us dare speak aloud our unease not so near to Sallow Lane. But of course, nothing threatens the peace of this place Close to the Lane all futile panic withdraws due to the price that we've paid for the grace of the Thing down Sallow Lane. Praise Its eyes! watching to see if you dare tread a pace, down old Sallow Lane, where It lies.

Ghosts Don't Tell Lies

Once upon a time, my best friend died. It was a stupid little accident, something that could have ended with a scare and a scraped elbow, but ended in an endless string of condolences. Not so much for me, for the family. I tried to support them then, but they didn't need me. I was not sure they had even needed my friend all that much. They grieved and cried a little at the funeral, and then moved on. I know they did, because I didn't. I couldn't for some time, because it just hurt too damn much, and then, I couldn't for a whole other reason. You see, my friend came back to me. Not to the family, not to Sam, who had been dating him for two we

Dead Ringer

When they shook hands, the first things John noticed about Gregory Treb were his fingers. “Piano-playing fingers,” his old woman would have said. They were long and lean- the kind more suited to detail work than heavy lifting. It wasn't a trait John had expected in a bellfounder. He was sure Mr. Treb would disagree with this idea- just like he disagreed with everything John had said. “That bell is a masterpiece.” The man flung his arm toward the stone chapel behind them. “You have no idea how many days went into making it. And now you're demanding a replacement?” John sighed. “As town foreman, it's

Caw

“Kill the heretics and their demonic creations! Chase them off into those abhorred woods they adore so much! Burn their house down to make sure they never come back!” The angry villagers’ voices echoed in Sienna’s head as she and her dad trudged through the thick layer of fallen leaves on the floor of the “abhorred woods.” She didn’t understand why the people of Salem hated magic so much. Did it scare them? Sienna was familiar with the feeling of being frightened by the unknown, mostly due to her past experiences in this forest. Too bad it was the only way she and her dad could go to elude the people

Black Water Slough

Halley crouched in the shadows eyeing the cabin before her.  A full moon lit the door-less entrance, highlighting the woman where she had been flung on the floor trussed like a pig for the spit.  There was no sign of the abductor, no vehicle in evidence.  Should she go ahead or call for help?  The boss wasn't likely to be happy with her either way.       A slight noise or maybe a stir of air sent her sideways and scrambling to her feet.  She flung one arm up to deflect the swinging club aimed at her head.  She was certain she didn't know th

Bob Wakes Up

Bob woke with one thought on his mind: He was hungry. It did not seem strange to him that he had to punch his way through two inches of wood or dig his way up through several feet of packed soil. As he gained his feet, he did not bother to brush the dirt off his clothes. Something was wiggling in his ear. He almost reached up to rid himself of the potential pest, but the smell of warm meat was carried to him on the night breeze.     Large stones jutted up from the ground around him- this was a graveyard- and Bob was careful to go around them. Still, there were some stones that hid low and caught on Bob's feet, and he found it took a lo

I need help

If you are reading this I could really use your help comparing both pieces below.  They are two versions of the same exact opening to Chapter 1 and I'm looking for some help on which one is stronger/better.  Thanks ahead of time! Here is the original opening to Journals of the Apocalypse. July 8th, 2012: 0700 It's been seven days since it happened.  We're trapped in the middle of nowhere.  Not really sure what happened at this point other than the mushroom clouds we could see over Columbus and Cleveland.  Only thing that saved us was that we decided to go out to Amish country last weekend.  Thank GOD it's in between both cities.  Cell phon

Bless Me Father

“Now. Find the egg” Every year the old man said the same thing, and every year we would split up, running barefoot through the city in all directions calling to each other as we rushed gleefully to nowhere in particular. Knowing only that for this one day someone cared about us. Three hundred and sixty days out of the year the man was a cantankerous old fool one. The sort of person that had no time for the children of the streets, but there was something about Easter that changed him. For a few days he was like a kindly grandfather who fairly doted on us, bringing soup and bread for us and even taking those few that he could into

By the Highway

The trees were all dead. No leaves, bare fingers stretched towards the sky in a twisted sort of prayer. The houses below them had no prayer – not even one coming from a tree – that could save them. They were ramshackle, they were peeling paint and broken pipes. They were forgotten glass shards embedded in a crying toddler's foot, or cold wind blasting its way through a broken window. They were everything that a house should not be, hazardous and inhospitable and ugly. They spared the families embarrassment, though, the houses. They were all the same, the same despair, the same inescapable, cavernous appearance. They were nothing to

All Hallows' Tales: Nightmarish New Beginnings

CONTEST CLOSED Look out for the results on October 31st. Step into my parlour... Welcome to the 14th annual All Hallows' Tales Contest, which I am hosting for @Memnalar this year, and I feel truly proud and honoured. I hope to make it feel as much like a 'normal' year as possible; as part of this, whenever you see the pumpkin symbol :pumpkin: it means I have copied Jay's words. This will be because I cannot word the thing any better myself, and/or there are certain traditional phrases that I feel it is right to include. (Just to be incredibly clear, any 'I' or 'me' copied over now refers to ME i.e. @ThornyEnglishRose and NOT to Jay!) As you very likely know, Jay's reason for handing over the reins this year is an unpredictable schedule at the start of a career change. By an extraordinary coincidence, I'm going through a major life change myself, having relocated to the coast (from Hertfordshire to Suffolk, if you want to know). The contest theme is, therefore, in homage to the

Seven Days of Sci-Fi - DAY SIX

You used to work there once, though I doubt you remember. They called it the Iron Sideshow. You used to be the main attraction, back before the League of Robotic Rights Movement took you. Anna Droid 2000 the Incredible Metal Girl, you were called. You brought in such big bucks that the ringmaster of the freakshow, Taundrette Alverson, played cricket with the Queen of the New Republic Russia every Saturday. Do you remember that? No? Master Alverson would even bring you to matches sometimes, to show you off to Queen Illyana.  Do you remember any of the other frea-- er, performers? Cyrill the Sassy Cyborg? The World's End

Where ravens feast on mortal sin, The world ends at a clifftop inn Whose greeting is a fleshless grin From pirates' gibbet at the door. This lonely structure is adorned With bodies of those men unmourned, With sign proclaiming Ye be warned, And always room enough for more. Our story, though, tells not of this, This feared, this known, this bland abyss, But rather of the promised bliss A spyglass offers to these men. For if, once fear has gripped his mind, Our pirate's hand, then eye should find The spyglass hidden just behind The rotting gibbet post, well then... Well, then he runs, or jumps, or flies, (That is to say, the fellow tries,) En

The Ifrit Ruba'iyat

Graceless descendant of the Smokeless Fire, Banished as the Perpetual Liar; I now bear the fiery brand of Ifrit, Exiled afield to the woods and briar. Born of a spark from the Almighty’s seat, Yet denied of a body warm and sweet; Forever drawn to the scent of the dead, And blamed for men’s own murderous deceit. Shackled down by the Prophet’s chains of lead, Forced then to carry out bidding most dread. Compelled to follow Salomon’s order, Trespassing boundaries none dared to tread. Now slave to a power-mad tyrant hoarder, Witness to sensual and wanton disorder; Head afire with decadent fantasies Had sullied my hand

Journal Into Madness

March Third    After a bruising three hour ride in a rickety donkey cart, I have finally reached the monastery. No road builders will come with miles of this site. It also turns out, much to my lasting disappointment, that neither will electricians or plumbers. Even now, I write this journal by the light of a candle grudgingly surrendered by the head of the order. Tomorrow I will endure the ride back into town for a personal generator, comfortable bedding, and decent food. I might be living among them, but there is no reason I should be forced to endure the tasteless, meager slop they call food.    Perhaps I shall spend the day there. Eve

The Deathly Divorce

"The Deathly Divorce" So be the night’s recurrent loss, a rebirth of Hallows Eve anew. Something Evil that spawned into this Earthly realm and had oppressed heavily into a loved one, a Son. Now gone. Possession and reaped by the ending of a Life in Offering to please The Primordial Gods and Demons of the Underworld. Mourning and grief blew sorrows, twisted beneath no justice but a fire that covered hatred lost. Nothing was ever resolved yet after. No prison blood fire can hold anything beyond corridors of the deranged tortured soul where a Son’s offering lasts in an aftermath of an ending Life. We lost him, Our only Son. The De

Field Trip

Stella had never been on a field trip before. Nothing fun like that ever happened at P.S. 103. Most days Stella’s school tablet sat untouched on her desk as she stared out the window, watching the usual red dust tumble over the horizon. But as she walked into class, she noticed a strange lady standing where Ms. Juno was supposed to be. This lady had a tight smile and looked funny. Not ugly or anything. Just too fancy for a Martian school in the boonies. More like a Starship Lady.    Somewhere, out there, the Starship Colonies are living it up, her mother would say during dinner. Once they find a patch of heaven, they’ll sett
